About Hornady Critical Duty 9mm
The Critical Duty is designed for full-size duty pistols and meets the FBI protocol barrier penetration requirements. The FlexLock bullet has a polymer tip like the Critical Defense but uses a heavier 135gr bullet with an InterLock band to prevent jacket-core separation. The +P version is carried by many LE agencies. Distinguished from Critical Defense by the red tip (vs orange) and intended use in full-size rather than compact pistols.
Critical Duty vs Critical Defense — Which to Carry
Critical Duty is built for full-size duty pistols with 4"+ barrels, where the heavier 135gr FlexLock bullet has enough velocity to expand reliably through intermediate barriers like auto glass and drywall. Critical Defense uses a lighter 115gr FTX bullet optimized for short-barreled compacts and subcompacts, where lower recoil and faster expansion from reduced velocities matter more. If you carry a Glock 19 or similar compact with a 4" barrel, Critical Duty will perform well; for a micro-compact like a P365 or Hellcat, stick with Critical Defense. The +P version (90236) is the better choice if your pistol is rated for it — the extra velocity improves barrier performance without a dramatic recoil penalty from a duty-size gun.
How It Compares
Critical Duty competes directly with Federal HST ($0.55–0.80/rd in 50-round LE boxes) and Speer Gold Dot ($0.55–0.85/rd). Critical Duty typically runs $0.65–0.95/rd in 25-round boxes, making it the most expensive of the three on a per-round basis. HST offers the best value when purchased in 50-round LE boxes, while Critical Duty's advantage is its barrier-blind FlexLock design — the polymer tip prevents clogging in a way traditional JHPs cannot match. Gold Dot's bonded core gives it an edge in weight retention.
Buying Tips
Critical Duty only ships in 25-round boxes, so there is no bulk discount tier like Federal HST's 50-round LE packs. Watch for sales at major online retailers where prices occasionally dip below $0.65/rd. Buy in case quantities (10+ boxes) when prices drop to lock in savings on shipping. Set a price alert to catch restocks — Critical Duty +P goes in and out of stock more frequently than the standard pressure version.
