About Speer Gold Dot 9mm

The Gold Dot is a bonded-core JHP that has been a standard LE duty round for decades. The bonding process fuses the jacket to the core, preventing separation on impact. The 124gr standard pressure (53618) is the most common configuration. Gold Dot G2 is the newer version with a filled cavity design, though the original remains more widely available and cheaper.

Standard vs +P — Which to Carry

The 124gr standard pressure (53618) is the default for most carry pistols and the most widely issued LE configuration. The +P version (53617) adds velocity for better expansion through intermediate barriers at the cost of more recoil and slightly faster wear on compact pistols. The 147gr (53619) is subsonic, making it the quietest option and a good choice for suppressed pistols. For concealed carry in compact or subcompact pistols, 124gr standard pressure is the most shootable option.

How It Compares

Speer Gold Dot's bonded core is its key differentiator — the electrochemical bonding process prevents jacket-core separation, providing more consistent penetration depth than non-bonded bullets. Federal HST expands wider but Gold Dot retains more weight. Both are excellent choices. Hornady Critical Defense ($0.60–0.90/rd in 25-round boxes) costs more per round than Gold Dot in 50-round LE packaging. For barrier-blind performance where reliability through auto glass or heavy clothing matters, Gold Dot's bonded design has the edge.

Buying Tips

The 50-round boxes (53618, 53617, 53619) are the best value — roughly 25% cheaper per round than the 20-round retail packaging (23618). Like Federal HST, Gold Dot is available in both "LE" and "Personal Defense" retail packaging — same bullet, same load, different box. Stock up when available since Speer occasionally has supply constraints. Buy enough to confirm reliable function in your specific pistol (at least 50 rounds) before committing as your carry round.
