About Federal HST 9mm
The HST is the most widely carried law enforcement handgun round in the US. Known for consistent expansion through heavy clothing barriers without plugging. The 124gr standard pressure load (P9HST1) is the most popular configuration. The "LE" and "Personal Defense" retail versions use the same bullet and load — only packaging differs. The 50-round LE boxes are significantly cheaper per round than 20-round retail boxes.
Standard vs +P — Which to Carry
Standard pressure 124gr (P9HST1) is the most popular choice and performs well from full-size and compact pistols alike. The +P version (P9HST3) adds about 50 fps velocity for slightly better expansion through barriers but generates more recoil — check your pistol's manual for +P compatibility. The 147gr options (P9HST2, P9HST5) offer less felt recoil and are preferred by some shooters in compact pistols. For most concealed carry, 124gr standard pressure is the recommendation.
How It Compares
Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot are the two most widely issued LE duty rounds in the US. HST typically expands wider (0.65–0.70") while Gold Dot retains more weight through barriers due to its bonded core. Hornady Critical Defense is designed for civilian carry with shorter barrels and costs $0.60–0.90/rd for 25-round boxes — significantly more per round than HST in 50-round LE packaging. For terminal performance per dollar, HST in 50-round boxes is the best value in premium 9mm defense ammo.
Buying Tips
Always buy 50-round LE boxes (P9HST1/P9HST2/P9HST3/P9HST5) instead of 20-round retail boxes (P9HST1S) — same bullet, same load, 25–30% cheaper per round. HST is widely available from online retailers that stock LE-packaged ammunition. Rotate your carry ammo annually and use the replaced rounds for practice. Keep 2–3 boxes on hand since defensive ammo occasionally goes out of stock during demand spikes.
