About Hornady Critical Defense 9mm

The Critical Defense uses Hornady's FTX bullet with a polymer tip that prevents hollow point clogging through heavy clothing. Designed specifically for civilian concealed carry with shorter barrels. Nickel-plated cases for reliable feeding and visibility in low light. The 115gr weight provides higher velocity from compact pistols than heavier bullets. Available only in 25-round boxes — per-round cost is higher than LE-packaged alternatives like HST and Gold Dot.

Critical Defense vs Critical Duty — What's the Difference

Critical Defense (this page) is designed for civilian concealed carry with short-barrel pistols (3–4"). It uses a thinner jacket for reliable expansion at lower velocities typical of compact guns. Critical Duty is built for full-size duty pistols with longer barrels — it uses a thicker jacket and InterLock band for better barrier penetration (auto glass, heavy clothing, wallboard). If you carry a subcompact or micro-compact, choose Critical Defense. For full-size or compact duty guns, consider Critical Duty.

How It Compares

Hornady Critical Defense is positioned as the civilian alternative to LE-oriented loads like Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot. The FTX polymer tip prevents the hollow point from clogging — a real advantage through heavy winter clothing. The downside is availability in 25-round boxes only, which pushes the per-round cost to $0.60–0.90/rd versus $0.55–0.70/rd for HST and Gold Dot in 50-round boxes. Terminal performance is excellent from short barrels but HST and Gold Dot offer better value if you can find the LE packaging.

Buying Tips

Critical Defense is only available in 25-round boxes, so per-round pricing is inherently higher than competitors sold in 50-round LE packaging. Hornady doesn't offer an LE-packaging alternative for Critical Defense. If budget matters and your pistol is compact or larger, consider Federal HST in 50-round boxes for significant per-round savings. Buy at least two boxes to confirm feeding reliability in your pistol before committing.
