What "9mm ballistics" actually means

If you're new to shooting, ballistics is just a fancy word for how a bullet performs after it leaves the barrel — how fast it travels (velocity, measured in feet per second / fps), how hard it hits (energy, measured in foot-pounds / ft-lbs), and how much it drops over distance. Understanding 9mm ballistics helps you pick the right ammo for range training, self-defense, or competition.

Quick takeaway: All common 9mm loads — 115gr, 124gr, and 147gr — deliver similar energy at the muzzle (320–410 ft-lbs). The difference is in how they deliver it: lighter bullets move faster with a snappier feel, heavier bullets move slower with a gentler push. For most shooters, 124gr is the sweet spot.

9mm ballistics by grain weight

All data below uses standard-pressure loads from major manufacturers (Federal, Speer, Winchester, Fiocchi) measured from a 4" test barrel unless noted. Real-world velocities vary by barrel length, lot, and temperature.

Muzzle energy differences between grain weights are smaller than most people expect. A 115gr at 1,180 fps (356 ft-lbs) and a 147gr at 990 fps (320 ft-lbs) are within 10% of each other at the muzzle. The difference narrows further at defensive distances (0–15 yards).

What grain weight means for ballistics

115gr — Lightest standard load. Highest velocity, flattest trajectory at short range, sharpest felt recoil impulse. This is the most common bulk FMJ weight and the cheapest to shoot. At defensive distances, 115gr JHP expands reliably but penetrates less deeply than heavier loads.

124gr — The NATO-standard weight (124gr = 8.0g, the NATO STANAG 4090 ball specification). Balances velocity and momentum. Most law enforcement agencies that specify a grain weight choose 124gr or 124gr +P. Federal HST 124gr and Speer Gold Dot 124gr are two of the most-tested defensive loads in existence.

147gr — Heaviest standard load. Subsonic velocity eliminates the sonic crack when suppressed. Deepest penetration in gel testing. Slower felt recoil (a push rather than a snap). Originally designed for suppressed MP5 submachine guns, now widely used in carry and competition.

Bullet drop

9mm is a short-range cartridge. Bullet drop is negligible at defensive distances but becomes relevant past 50 yards.

Zeroed at 25 yards from a 4" barrel. Past 50 yards, the 147gr drops noticeably faster. None of this matters for self-defense — the vast majority of defensive encounters happen within 7 yards.

Barrel length and velocity

Barrel length has a real effect on 9mm velocity. Shorter barrels mean less time for expanding gas to accelerate the bullet.

The biggest velocity penalty comes from the 3.1" micro-compact barrels common in modern concealed carry guns. A P365 or Hellcat loses roughly 70–100 fps compared to a full-size duty gun. This is why some manufacturers specifically test and market their JHP loads for short-barrel performance — Federal HST Micro and Hornady Critical Defense are designed to expand reliably at these lower velocities.

Pistol caliber carbines (16" barrels) gain 200+ fps, which significantly increases energy and flattens trajectory. A 124gr at 1,400 fps from a PCC produces roughly 540 ft-lbs — nearly 50% more energy than the same load from a handgun.

+P vs standard pressure

+P loads are loaded to higher pressures (SAAMI max: 38,500 psi for +P vs 35,000 psi for standard). The result is roughly 50–100 fps more velocity from the same barrel.

The tradeoff is more recoil, more flash, and faster wear on the firearm. Most modern handguns are rated for +P, but check your owner's manual. Older or lightweight alloy-framed guns may not be.

For most people, standard-pressure 124gr JHP from a quality manufacturer is sufficient. +P is worth considering if you carry a micro-compact and want to offset the velocity loss from a short barrel.

9mm sits in the middle of the common handgun calibers — more energy than .380, comparable to .45 ACP, less than .40 S&W and 10mm. The difference is that 9mm achieves its energy at higher velocity with lighter bullets, which means less recoil and more magazine capacity.

All of these loads meet the FBI 12–18" penetration standard. Expansion varies by design — HST and Ranger T tend to expand wider, while Critical Duty prioritizes barrier penetration (auto glass, drywall) over maximum expansion.

The bottom line: modern 9mm JHP from any major manufacturer performs within a tight band. The difference between the best and worst loads on this list is less meaningful than shot placement.
