The pricing paradox
.380 ACP uses a shorter case, a lighter bullet, and less powder than 9mm — yet it costs more per round. This is entirely a production volume story.
9mm FMJ range ammo runs $0.17–0.25/rd. .380 ACP FMJ runs $0.22–0.34/rd — roughly 25–35% more despite being a smaller, less powerful cartridge.
9mm is the highest-volume handgun cartridge manufactured globally. Massive production runs drive unit costs down. .380 ACP sells at a fraction of the volume, which means higher per-unit manufacturing cost passed to the buyer.
For defense ammo, the gap narrows. 9mm JHP runs $0.55–1.00/rd and .380 ACP JHP runs $0.50–1.00/rd — roughly equivalent.

Ballistics
The energy gap is substantial. 9mm delivers roughly 75–80% more muzzle energy than .380 ACP with standard FMJ loads. This translates directly to terminal performance.
Why it matters for defense ammo: Hollow point bullets require a minimum velocity to expand reliably. 9mm JHP operates well above this threshold from virtually any barrel length. .380 ACP JHP is marginal — from short-barreled pocket pistols (2.5–3" barrels), velocities often drop below the expansion threshold for standard JHP designs.
This is why .380 ACP defense ammo is more specialized. Loads like Federal HST Micro and Hornady Critical Defense FTX are specifically engineered for .380 velocities and short barrels. Standard JHP designs that work in 9mm may not expand reliably at .380 velocities.
The barrel length factor: A 9mm from a 3" micro-compact barrel still delivers ~1,050–1,100 fps with 115gr FMJ. A .380 ACP from a 2.8" pocket pistol barrel delivers ~880–920 fps with 95gr FMJ. The 9mm retains enough velocity for reliable JHP expansion; the .380 is on the ragged edge.
The micro-compact revolution
Between 2018 and 2023, micro-compact 9mm pistols fundamentally changed the concealed carry market:
- Sig P365 (2018) — 10+1 rounds of 9mm in a package barely larger than the Ruger LCP II (.380)
- Springfield Hellcat (2019) — 11+1 in a similar footprint
- S&W Shield Plus (2021) — 13+1 with a slightly larger grip
- Sig P365X and Hellcat Pro — extended options approaching compact size
Before these guns existed, .380 ACP had a real size advantage. Pocket .380s like the Ruger LCP and S&W Bodyguard were noticeably smaller and lighter than the smallest available 9mm pistols. Today, the size difference between a Ruger LCP Max (.380, 10+1) and a Sig P365 (9mm, 10+1) is marginal — a few ounces and fractions of an inch.

The .380 pocket pistols are still lighter (5–7 oz difference) and slightly shorter. For true pocket carry — in a front pants pocket with a pocket holster — this difference can matter. For IWB (inside-waistband) or appendix carry, the difference is negligible.
Recoil
.380 ACP generates less felt recoil than 9mm. However, this advantage is partially offset by the gun platforms: .380 pocket pistols are very light, which amplifies perceived recoil. A .380 from a 12-oz Ruger LCP can feel snappier than a 9mm from a 21-oz Sig P365 despite the lower cartridge energy.
The recoil advantage matters most for:
- Shooters with hand strength limitations (arthritis, injury recovery)
- Shooters who are recoil-averse and won't practice with 9mm
- Backup guns, or a gun for someone who won't practice much
When each caliber makes sense
Pick 9mm if:
- You're choosing a primary carry gun and can accommodate micro-compact size
- Training volume matters (cheaper to practice with)
- Maximum defensive capability from a carry-size platform is the priority
- You want the widest possible selection of guns and ammo
Go with .380 if:
- You need the absolute smallest and lightest possible carry gun
- True pocket carry (front pants pocket) is the intended carry method
- Recoil sensitivity is a real constraint for the shooter
- The gun is a backup to a primary carry piece
