About Federal HST .45 ACP

The .45 ACP HST delivers the same expansion reliability as the 9mm version in a larger bore. The 230gr standard pressure load is preferred for most carry guns. The .45 ACP HST is already subsonic at standard pressure (around 890 fps), making it naturally suppressor-friendly. The 50-round LE boxes are significantly cheaper per round than 20-round retail packaging.

Standard Pressure vs +P

The 230gr standard pressure load (P45HST2) runs around 890 fps and is the right choice for most .45 ACP carry guns. The +P version (P45HST1) pushes the same bullet to approximately 950 fps for slightly more expansion and energy, but generates noticeably more recoil and muzzle flash. Most .45 ACP pistols are rated for +P, but check your manual. For compact and subcompact .45s, standard pressure is easier to control and still delivers excellent terminal performance given the large bore diameter.

How It Compares

Federal HST is the top law enforcement .45 ACP load and a standard recommendation for civilian carry. Speer Gold Dot .45 ACP 230gr runs $0.65--0.95/rd and offers comparable expansion with a bonded core. Hornady Critical Duty .45 ACP +P 220gr runs $0.70--1.00/rd and is optimized for barrier penetration. Winchester Ranger T-Series .45 ACP is excellent but harder to find in retail channels. For most carriers, HST standard pressure at $0.60--0.85/rd in 50-round boxes is the best value in premium .45 ACP defense ammo.

Buying Tips

Always buy the 50-round LE-style boxes (P45HST2) over the 20-round retail packs (P45HST2S) — the per-round savings are substantial, often $0.15--0.25/rd cheaper. Many online retailers stock the 50-count boxes. Buy enough to run at least two magazines through your carry gun for function testing, then keep the rest for carry rotation. HST has a long shelf life stored in cool, dry conditions, so stocking up when prices dip below $0.65/rd is worthwhile.
