About Federal Gold Medal Match .308

The Gold Medal Match with Sierra MatchKing bullets is the benchmark for factory .308 match ammunition. The 168gr is the traditional choice for distances under 800 yards; the 175gr has a better ballistic coefficient for longer range. Used by military and LE precision shooters worldwide. Consistent powder charges and tight lot-to-lot accuracy. Brass is highly prized by reloaders.

168gr vs 175gr — Which to Choose

The 168gr Sierra MatchKing (GM308M) is the most widely used factory match load in .308 and the default for NRA High Power and most local precision rifle matches inside 600 yards. It shoots sub-MOA in most bolt rifles and many semi-auto platforms. The 175gr (GM308M2) was developed for the US military's M118LR sniper round and stays supersonic past 1,000 yards where the 168gr goes transonic around 800 yards. If you shoot beyond 800 yards, the 175gr is the better choice. For everything else, the 168gr is slightly cheaper and widely available.

How It Compares

Federal Gold Medal Match is the factory benchmark — most handloaders measure their results against it. Hornady ELD Match 168gr offers similar accuracy with a polymer-tipped bullet that some shooters prefer for long-range consistency. Berger and Lapua factory match loads are available at higher price points ($1.50–2.50/rd) with marginally tighter tolerances. For shooters who don't reload, Gold Medal Match at $0.85–1.25/rd represents the best accuracy-per-dollar in factory .308.

Buying Tips

The 20-round box is the only configuration available — Federal doesn't offer Gold Medal Match in bulk packs. Watch for retailer sales around major shooting competitions (NRA championships, PRS season) when retailers discount precision ammo. The brass is among the best factory brass available for .308 reloaders, so factor in brass value if you reload. Buy from the same lot when possible for competition consistency.
