About Federal American Eagle 9mm
Federal American Eagle is the go-to range and training ammo for most 9mm shooters. Brass-cased, boxer-primed, and reloadable. The 115gr FMJ (AE9DP) is the most common configuration and one of the most widely available 9mm loads in the US. Consistent quality from Federal's Anoka, MN facility. The 100-round value packs offer better per-round pricing than 50-round boxes.
Which Grain Weight to Choose
The 115gr (AE9DP) is the standard range load — lightest recoil, highest velocity, and the cheapest option. The 124gr (AE9AP) matches the weight of most defensive JHP loads (Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot), making it a better training companion if you carry 124gr for defense. The 147gr FN (AE9FP) is subsonic and the quietest option, preferred by suppressed shooters. For general range practice, 115gr is the default choice.
How It Compares
Federal AE 9mm competes directly with Blazer Brass ($0.17–0.24/rd) and Winchester White Box ($0.18–0.24/rd) — all three are the standard budget brass-cased 9mm range loads. AE is typically priced within $0.01–0.02/rd of both competitors. The quality difference is negligible for range use. Magtech and Remington UMC round out the budget tier at similar prices. At these margins, shipping cost and pack size matter more than brand loyalty.
Buying Tips
The 100-round value pack (AE9DP100) is the best balance of savings and convenience — $0.18–0.24/rd versus $0.20–0.26/rd for 50-round boxes. Look for multi-pack deals where retailers bundle 4–5 boxes together for additional savings. Federal AE 9mm is almost never out of stock — it's one of the highest-volume loads in the US market. The brass is consistent quality for reloaders.
