About CCI Mini-Mag .22 LR

The CCI Mini-Mag is the gold standard for reliable .22 LR semi-auto cycling. The 36gr copper-plated hollow point (CPHP) at 1260 fps feeds reliably in virtually every .22 semi-auto including notoriously picky pistols like the Walther PPK/S .22. The 40gr round nose version is slightly slower but equally reliable. More expensive than bulk .22 LR but the reliability premium is worth it for semi-autos.

36gr CPHP vs 40gr CPRN

The 36gr copper-plated hollow point (0030) is the flagship Mini-Mag load — higher velocity (1260 fps vs 1235 fps), better expansion for small game, and the most popular SKU by far. The 40gr copper-plated round nose (0031) is slightly slower and designed for target shooting where expansion is not needed. Both cycle semi-autos equally well. For general plinking and small game, the 36gr CPHP is the better all-around choice. For pure target work where you want slightly less barrel leading, the 40gr RN is a fine option.

How It Compares

CCI Mini-Mag sits between budget bulk ammo and true match-grade .22 LR. It costs $0.07--0.11/rd versus $0.04--0.07/rd for bulk options like CCI Blazer or Federal AutoMatch. The reliability premium is the reason to buy Mini-Mag — it cycles in guns that choke on cheaper ammo. Federal AutoMatch at $0.05--0.07/rd is the closest competitor for semi-auto reliability at near-bulk pricing. Aguila Super Extra 40gr runs $0.05--0.08/rd and is another solid cycling option. For match shooting, CCI Standard Velocity ($0.08--0.12/rd) is more accurate but does not cycle all semi-autos.

Buying Tips

The 300-round bulk box (0030B) and 6,300-round case (0030C) offer the best per-round pricing — look for the 300-count under $0.08/rd. Mini-Mag availability has stabilized since the post-2020 rimfire shortage, but it still sells out during holiday surges. Buy in 300-round boxes or larger for the best value. Mini-Mag is clean-burning and copper-plated, which reduces barrel fouling and makes it a good choice for guns you do not want to clean after every session.
