Which .450 Bushmaster Loads Are Most Common?

Current observed prices are in the 30-day price summary at the top of this page, recomputed from tracked retailer listings. Loads are typically sold as soft-point, hollow-point and polymer-tip hunting bullets, with some full-metal-jacket and plated practice loads. The search button at the top of this page shows which are in stock now.

What Is the .450 Bushmaster?

The .450 Bushmaster was developed by Tim LeGendre of LeMag Firearms, who had earlier developed the related .45 Professional, and Bushmaster adopted it in 2007. It is a rebated, straight-walled case derived from the .284 Winchester. It fires a .452-inch bullet from a case 1.700 inches long, with a maximum overall length of 2.260 inches.

The cartridge was designed to work in standard M16, M4 and AR-15 lower receivers, with a different upper receiver and modified magazines. Rifles in the chambering have also been made as bolt-action and single-shot designs.

Rifles That Chamber It

  • AR-15-pattern rifles and pistols, using a .450 Bushmaster upper and barrel.
  • Bolt-action rifles from several manufacturers.
  • Single-shot rifles such as the Ruger No. 1.

Check the chambering marked on the barrel before you buy ammunition. Several .45-caliber cartridges share a similar name or bullet diameter.

How .450 Bushmaster Differs From Similar Cartridges

  • vs. .458 SOCOM: also a big-bore AR-15 cartridge, but with a different case and bullet diameter. The two are not interchangeable.
  • vs. .45-70 Government: a much older rimmed cartridge for lever-action and single-shot rifles.
  • vs. .45 ACP: a handgun cartridge with a different case. A shared "45" in the name does not make the cartridges interchangeable.
