What to know about .410 bore slugs

The .410 slug is the bare minimum for deer-sized game. A ¼ oz (109gr) slug generates roughly 650–750 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle — adequate for deer inside 50 yards in jurisdictions that permit it, but marginal compared to 20 gauge slugs (~1,500 ft-lbs) or 12 gauge slugs (~2,500 ft-lbs). Shot placement must be precise. In slug-only hunting zones, most hunters prefer 20 gauge or 12 gauge for the significant energy advantage.
