About Hornady ELD-X .270 Winchester (Precision Hunter)

The ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) bullet is Hornady's answer to polymer-tip melt at long range. Conventional polymer-tip hunting bullets were documented to melt at the high velocities needed for long-range trajectories, changing their aerodynamics mid-flight. The ELD-X uses Hornady's Heat Shield tip — a polymer formulated to maintain dimensional stability at velocities above 3,000 fps — ensuring the bullet flies its advertised trajectory to impact.

The .270 Win ELD-X loads are packaged as Precision Hunter ammunition. The 130gr ELD-X at 3,060 fps with a G1 BC of .486 delivers a flat trajectory to 400+ yards with significantly better retained velocity than traditional .270 Win hunting loads. The 145gr at .536 BC is optimized for shots beyond 400 yards where the higher BC advantage compounds.

These loads represent the premium tier of .270 Win ammunition — approximately 50—100% more expensive than Core-Lokt or Power-Point loads. The performance advantage is meaningful for western hunters making shots at 300—600 yards; for timber hunting under 200 yards, standard hunting loads are more cost-effective.
