About Wolf Gold .223

Despite the Wolf branding, Wolf Gold is not Russian-made — it's manufactured in Taiwan by a different company than the steel-cased Wolf line. Brass-cased, boxer-primed, and reloadable. Consistently one of the cheapest brass-cased .223 loads on the market. The 1000-round cases are extremely popular with budget-conscious AR shooters. Not affected by the Russian ammo import ban since it's Taiwanese.

.223 Remington vs 5.56 NATO — Does It Matter?

Wolf Gold is .223 Remington, not 5.56 NATO. The practical difference: .223 is loaded to slightly lower pressure. It's safe in any 5.56 or .223 Wylde chamber. If your barrel is stamped .223 only, this is a better choice than 5.56-spec ammo. For the vast majority of AR-15 shooters with 5.56 or Wylde chambers, the distinction doesn't matter — Wolf Gold runs fine.

How It Compares

Wolf Gold typically trades the "cheapest brass .223" title with PMC X-TAC M193. Both run $0.28–0.36/rd in 1000-round cases. Wolf Gold is .223 spec while PMC is 5.56 — marginally less pressure, marginally less muzzle velocity. In practice, both shoot equally well from standard AR-15s. Federal AE 5.56 costs a few cents more but offers Lake City brass and 5.56 pressure. For pure budget range ammo in brass, Wolf Gold is hard to beat.

Buying Tips

The 1000-round case is the only configuration worth buying — the per-round savings over 20-round boxes is substantial and most retailers ship cases free. Wolf Gold availability can fluctuate since it ships from Taiwan, but the import ban on Russian ammunition does not apply. The brass is reloadable but lighter than Lake City — adjust powder charges if reloading. Stock up when you find it under $0.30/rd.
