About Tula 7.62x39

Tula is manufactured at the Tula Cartridge Works in Russia and was one of the most popular budget AK/SKS ammo brands. Steel-cased with lacquer or polymer coating, Berdan-primed (not reloadable). Note: Russian ammo imports were banned by the US State Department in September 2021. Current supply is remaining inventory only — prices may vary based on availability. When available, Tula remains one of the cheapest 7.62x39 options.

Import Ban and Availability

Russian ammo imports were banned by the US State Department in September 2021, and no new Tula 7.62x39 has entered the country since existing import permits expired. All current supply is remaining warehouse and distributor inventory, which is steadily declining. Prices have risen from the pre-ban $0.18--0.22/rd range to current levels. Once remaining stock is exhausted, Tula 7.62x39 will be unavailable unless the import policy changes. Domestic and non-Russian alternatives are filling the gap but at higher price points.

How It Compares

Tula and Wolf 7.62x39 are functionally identical — both are steel-cased, Berdan-primed Russian production at $0.22--0.32/rd depending on remaining stock. For brass-cased alternatives, Norma Tactical 124gr runs $0.35--0.50/rd and is range-friendly at facilities that ban steel cases. Serbian-made PPU 123gr brass-cased FMJ sits at $0.40--0.55/rd. Barnaul-branded stock (also Russian) is in the same boat as Tula and Wolf. If your range allows steel cases and you find Tula under $0.28/rd, it remains the cheapest way to feed an AK.

Buying Tips

Buy in bulk (1,000-round cases) for the best per-round pricing on remaining inventory. Check whether your range allows steel-cased ammo before stocking up — many indoor ranges prohibit it due to the bimetal jacket attracting magnets and causing backstop wear. Tula is not reloadable (Berdan-primed steel cases), so factor that into your cost calculation if you reload other calibers. Stock is finite — when it is gone, it is gone. If you shoot 7.62x39 regularly, securing a case at current pricing is worth considering.
