About Hornady LeverEvolution .30-30 Winchester

The LeverEvolution 160gr FTX solved a design constraint that had limited the .30-30 Winchester for over a century. Tubular magazine lever-action rifles require blunt-nosed or flat-tipped bullets because pointed spitzer bullets rest against the primer of the cartridge ahead in the magazine — a recoil-induced chain-fire hazard. This restriction forced the .30-30 to use flat-nose or round-nose bullets with significantly lower ballistic coefficients, limiting effective range compared to cartridges with the same energy.

Hornady's FTX polymer tip compresses on impact rather than transmitting force to the primer, making it safe in tubular magazines while providing the aerodynamic profile of a pointed bullet. The 160gr FTX at 2,400 fps has a BC of approximately .330 — meaningfully better than traditional flat-nose .30-30 loads — which extends the cartridge's effective range from roughly 150 yards to 200—250 yards with proper trajectory compensation.

At its MSRP premium over Core-Lokt or Power-Point, the LeverEvolution is worth the cost for deer hunters who want to extend their effective range. For practice and close-range timber hunting where trajectory advantage is irrelevant, traditional flat-nose loads are more cost-effective.
